Preparing for Surgery
To help the staff at Wisconsin Surgery Center prepare for you appointment, one of our friendly and knowledgeable pre-admission nurses will call you at least 48 hours before your scheduled procedure. She will talk with you about the medications you are currently taking and their dosages, as well as your medical and surgical history. Please collect the relevant information and keep it handy for when the nurse calls.

TIP: You may find our handy Personal Medication Log useful for cataloging your prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

If you have not received a call from a pre-admission nurse within 48 hours of your procedure, or if you have any questions at all, please call us at 414-384-2100 and ask to speak to a pre-op nurse.

General Anesthesia or Sedation

If your procedure involves general anesthesia or sedation, please be sure to follow these important guidelines:
  • Patients who are having surgery involving general anesthesia or sedation must make arrangements for a responsible adult to bring them home and stay with them for at least 24 hours following the surgery. A map and driving directions are available in the "Contact Us" section of our website.
  • Take nothing by mouth after midnight the night before your procedure. This means you should not drink any fluids, eat food, chew gum, smoke a cigarette, or have a mint.
  • If you brush your teeth, do not swallow any water.
  • Ask your doctor or pre-admission nurse which medications, if any, you should take the morning of surgery. Take your medications with only a sip of water.
  • If you are a diabetic or on blood pressure or heart medication(s), please obtain specific instructions from your physician or contact us for instructions.
These guidelines are for your own safety. An empty stomach will help you avoid vomiting and potentially choking during your procedure.

For All Patients

Following are some guidelines for preparing for your surgery. You can help us ensure your comfort and safety by following these instructions carefully, and sharing them with those who will be caring for you after your procedure.
  • Patients who will be having local anesthesia only may typically drive themselves home.
  • Patients who are having surgery involving general anesthesia or sedation must make arrangements for a responsible adult to bring them home and stay with them for at least 24 hours following the surgery. A map and driving directions are available in the "Contact Us" section of our website.
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol within 24 hours of your surgery.
  • Talk to your pre-admission nurse or doctor if you are taking any herbal remedies. Your doctor may want you to stop taking them before your procedure.
  • Be sure to ask whether you should discontinue use of certain over-the-counter medications, such as vitamin E, aspirin, naproxen (Aleve, etc.), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.), and other anti-inflammatories.
  • Notify your doctor immediately if there is any change in your physical condition prior to surgery, such as a cold, persistent cough, fever, or any other health-related problems.
  • If you must cancel or reschedule your surgery, please contact us as soon as possible to make the necessary arrangements.
  • We will make every effort to provide you with appropriate pain control after your procedure. While we may not be able to eliminate your pain, we can lower your pain to a tolerable level. After your surgery, your doctor will write you a prescription for pain medication to take at home. However, since we do not fill prescriptions on-site, you should plan to get your prescription filled at the pharmacy of your choice after your procedure.
